Planting design

Layered planting schemes with quiet, confident character.

Pebble Landscape Design create planting schemes that feel immersive and effortless – with structure in winter, colour through the seasons and a clear sense of atmosphere.

Whether we're refreshing existing borders or designing planting for a completely new garden, every scheme is tailored to your soil, aspect, maintenance preferences and the way you'd like your garden to feel.

Planting that feels natural, not over–designed

The best planting schemes have a quiet confidence: clear structure, plenty of movement and rhythm, and planting that suits both place and people. We aim for gardens that are full and expressive, but never fussy.

We consider sightlines from inside the house, how the light moves through the day, where you'll sit and how you'll use the space. Every plant is chosen for a reason – whether that's scent, texture, pollinator value or the way it catches low evening sun.

Planting design can be commissioned as part of a full garden design, or as a focused refresh for existing beds and borders where the layout works but the planting no longer feels cohesive.

Planting design services

From single borders to whole gardens, we offer a flexible planting design service that can work alongside existing hard landscaping or as part of a complete redesign.

Full–garden planting plans

A complete planting scheme for front and rear gardens, including structure, understory and groundcover. Ideal when hard landscaping is in place, but the planting needs a coherent, long–term strategy.

Border redesign & refresh

Targeted planting design for key areas – such as a main terrace border, entrance or boundary – to lift the whole garden without needing to start completely from scratch.

New–build & developer gardens

Planting schemes that quickly soften new–build plots, providing privacy, shade and a stronger sense of place, while working with young soil and often–exposed conditions.

How our planting design process works

A clear, step–by–step process – from understanding your garden and style preferences through to planting day on site.

Planting design for both established and new gardens

Some gardens need a complete re–think; others simply need a more coherent planting layer over an existing layout. We're happy to advise which route makes most sense for your space and budget.

In mature gardens, we'll often retain key trees and shrubs, editing and underplanting to bring renewed energy without losing character. In new landscapes, we create early impact and structure that will develop gracefully over time.

Planting design can also dovetail with our 3D visualisation service, helping you understand volume and height through the seasons before anything is planted.

Planting Design – frequently asked questions

A few of the practical questions clients often have when considering a planting–led project.

Can you work with our existing hard landscaping?
Yes. Many planting–only projects use existing patios, paths and boundaries as a starting point. We'll be honest if we feel any changes to layout or materials would significantly improve the result, but it's entirely possible to transform the feel of a garden through planting alone.
Do you design low–maintenance planting schemes?
Absolutely. During our first conversations we'll clarify how much time you have for gardening and whether you prefer neat and ordered, softer and more natural, or something in between. We then select plants that suit that level of care and provide clear, simple guidance for seasonal tasks.
Can you create planting plans for self–install?
If you enjoy gardening and would like to do the planting yourself, we can provide planting plans, schedules and guidance that allow you to phase the work over time while still working to a coherent overall scheme.
What size of garden is suitable for a planting design service?
We work on everything from compact courtyards and roof terraces to larger country gardens. The key factor is whether a thoughtful planting strategy will make a meaningful difference to how you use and enjoy the space.

Considering a planting redesign?

If your garden feels almost there but the planting isn't quite working, we'd be pleased to talk through how a considered planting scheme could transform it.
